Wilson Ong

Sometimes you can find treasure in your own back yard.  A seventh grade student, Sailor, who is a fabulous artist, was discussing this morning with me her father's recent artwork.  I dove into the website and am amazed at his work!  Wilson Ong is a local artist who creates still life, landscape, portraits, and commissioned paintings.  His work is phenomenal! I cannot believe the talent in the Corning community.  From big museums like CMOG to smalled galleries like West End, we have so much talent in this area and Wilson Ong is an exceptional example. The work I fell in love with was Wilson's pun paintings!  Check out his work at his website http://www.wilsonong.com/

Marbling with Shaving Cream

To kick off our monoprinting unit, we experimented with shaving cream and paint to make pages with a marbleized effect.  First, we covered a small tray with a layer of shaving cream about an inch think.  Next we added drops of two or three colors of paint. We used a stick to swirl the colors then pressed the paper down on the surface gently patting it to get the top layer of paint to stick.  We pulled the paper off and used a squeegee to remove the extra shaving cream revealing our beautiful marble designs.  The shaving cream and paint can then be reused a few times to make variations of the monoprints.  Here are some of our results!

Character To Costume

A seventh grade student, Phoenix K., has created her own signature character "Gir".  This little fellow appears in her doodles, drawings, cartoons, and even sculpture.  During the Holidays, Gir had a Santa suit and wished us all "Happy Human Days".  How creative is she!!!!

Well I noticed at lunch that Phoenix had a unique outfit on.  She transformed her hoodie into Gir!  Someday I expect to see a cartoon and a whole clothing line in the media based on Gir as Phoenix continues to imagine and create this delightful character!

Out of the Box!

Our drawing assignment was to create your version of a "Winter Wonderland".  Shawn T. really was thinking "outside the box" when he made this 3D diorama for his homework assignment.  I love his creativity!

Kiln Explosion

When air gets trapped inside a clay piece it expands when it is heated in the kiln.  This causes an enormous amount of pressure to build up inside the clay piece.  If the pressure gets strong enough, the clay piece blows up in the kiln.  Sometimes this results in cracks or pieces being blown off.  Other times the clay piece literally explode and the clay pieces shattering around are blown out like shrapnel from a bomb.  This can destroy neighboring pieces.  I had three pieces that had walls that were too thick or air that was trapped inside from non-sufficient wedging.  This caused a massive explosion during my last kiln fire.  Students always seem to be excited when I talked about this, so here are pictures.

Don't worry, grades are not affected by pieces that did not survive.  Students will have an opportunity to re-make their piece if they want to also.
